Ad Astra is an immersive ascent for choir and organ, from the depths of the abyss to the vault of heaven. From Arvo Pärt’s De Profundis to Jonathan Dove, the music unfolds in a single, unbroken breath, rising towards a final blaze of light.
Ad Astra is more than a concert: it is a spiritual ascent. Imagine the nave plunged into darkness, suddenly torn open by the earth-shaking rumble of Arvo Pärt’s De Profundis.
Out of this primordial night, a choir in motion emerges, brushes past you and encircles you, transforming stone into a resonant instrument. In a single, uninterrupted eighty-minute arc, the stark purity of Gregorian chant embraces the orchestral thunder of Tavener and the solace of Brahms. The organ, now a mystical mist, now a crystalline flash, shapes the space and suspends time.
Then, at the furthest reaches of ecstatic silence, Jonathan Dove’s music bursts forth: a shower of sonic stars suddenly floods the building from every direction. The abyss is conquered; the vertigo is complete. The audience no longer merely listens — it reaches out and touches the firmament.
