On reflection, Christmas is not just a date—it is a journey that brings us back each year to a story 2,000 years old, ever the same yet ever renewed.

It all begins with the angel Gabriel delivering the first Ave Maria and announcing to Mary that she will give birth to a child. Thus begins Advent, a season that has inspired many composers: Rheinberger and Kodály, among others, have written gems reflecting this eager anticipation of the good news.

Then comes Christmas, and everyone sets out on their journey. First, Mary and Joseph pave the way to the manger. Then the angels traverse the skies to share their joy. The shepherds, realizing something extraordinary is happening, hurry along their path. Finally, a star rises in the sky, guiding wise men from distant lands to the tiny child lying in a bed of straw.

Each of these paths has its beloved and familiar melodies, from lullabies to joyous dances. These songs are the fruit of a rich musical tradition that combines great sacred works (Poulenc, Victoria) with traditional carols reimagined in the 20th and 21st centuries, including many English carols.

For this tender yet joyful program, the Ensemble la Sportelle features four singers: four voices to musically explore the four paths of Christmas.
