Mozart’s life was like a shooting star — brief, yet of a rare intensity. This prodigy, who continues to astound us centuries after his passing, demonstrated a protean ability to reinvent himself without ever losing his unique voice. On the eve of the 270th anniversary of the birth of the divine child of Salzburg, Debora Waldman, Idomeneo, and Ensemble la Sportelle invite us to delve into some of the most emblematic pages of Mozart’s genius.
A final, blazing spark in Mozart’s life, his Requiem has always been shrouded in mystery and speculation. Immortalized by the legends passed down by Pushkin and Milos Forman, this Requiem seems to accompany the very extinguishing of the vital flame of the great Wolfgang. Left unfinished at the time of his death in December 1791, the Requiem remains an open question — for both the reader and the listener. Yet in every movement Mozart sketched, we discern the outline of a life entirely devoted to music, interwoven with deep affinities for the composers he admired: Handel, Michael Haydn, and François-Joseph Gossec. This Requiem is not an end, but a beginning.
Debora Waldman and the Idomeneo orchestra will give voice to these timeless questions, joined by the luminous and kaleidoscopic voices of Ensemble la Sportelle, as they unveil the full power of this iconic score in a new light.
